Three armed suspects who allegedly tried to rob a security guard in Oakland were injured in a car crash while fleeing the scene of the crime.

HAYWARD, Calif. (KGO) — Police investigators in multiple East Bay cities are now actively involved in an attempted armed robbery case.

The suspects ended up crashing their car in Hayward near Hesperian Boulevard and Turner Court on Wednesday.

SKY7 was over the scene, which showed a car wrapped around a light pole and another vehicle with some front-end damage farther down the street.

Oakland Police say three attempted armed robbery suspects were inside that car. In fact before the crash officers say those three suspects went after a security guard near International and Durant Avenue, where the Durant Square Mall is located.

“The masked individuals pointed their firearm at the security guard, demanded the security guard drop their firearm, security guard feared for their life, and fired in their direction,” said Paul Chambers of the Oakland Police Department.

No one was hit, and it’s unknown what they were going after, but it scared the three away, who then drove off. Officers soon located the vehicle, attempted to make a traffic stop, and those inside sped off. Police say there was not a pursuit, but their chopper did follow the car to Hayward where the vehicle collided with another car, and crashed into the traffic pole.

“I’m gonna need Code 3 medical! They just high speed collided. Drivers door is open, I don’t see anybody out yet and vehicle is smoking,” could be heard on the police scanner traffic.

All three suspects were hurt. Their injuries range from minor to critical. Two of the three suspects are juveniles. A person inside the vehicle they crashed into was also hurt, the extent of their injuries are unknown.

Officers say the helicopter was able to follow the car outside of city limits because the suspects inside the car were armed. Police didn’t say how fast the suspect vehicle was traveling but the damage was extensive.
